Episode 3: Steel Town (Still) Down?

How the Policy Conversation on Addiction Has Changed in the Past Five Years

Title Sequence (Screenshot from Steel Town Down)

In a recent edition of the newsletter, I wrote about how the documentary Steel Town Down impacted the community after its release in 2018.

Episode #3 of the Sault Ste. Marie Podcast is an interview with Desiree Beck, a longtime outreach worker, harm reduction advocate, and founder of Willow Addiction Support Services.

Beck speaks about the concept of harm reduction, some of the backlash she endured after appearing in the documentary, how the local policy conversation has changed with five years of hindsight, and the progress of Sault Ste. Marie’s proposed supervised consumption site, among other things.

An updated version of the newsletter edition was recently published at Sault This Week, including additional commentary from Sault Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and local advocate Connie Raynor-Elliott (of SOYA).
